Conquering Photoshop

Even though my job role primarily consists of writing web content for our clients, I love being given the opportunity to experiment in other facets of online marketing.

Recently we have been re-designing our email marketing strategy for one of our clients – Property Mentor – and as part of our reformatting I have been able to play around with Photoshop, which has been great for helping me learn how to modify graphics. Continue reading

Keeping it clean with Photoshop

Many designers will work on their own PSD’s and then pass these onto other designers. Due to this it is a good idea to keep your files organised, clean and maintainable so the person working on your PSD can productively complete their task in your absence.

So what is a good way of doing this?

The first approach is to keep your project files organised. For every project you should only need a maximum of three folders; 1. PSD Files 2. HTML Files 3. Client Info Files. These three files are quite explanatory however I will quickly mention the elements that can be contained within. Continue reading

Real Time Search :: Should SEO’s Care?

There’s been a lot of buzz around real time search and indexing recently. Google buying Twitter? Bing using real time search? Friendfeed added real time search with Facebook hot on their heels.

Before I start looking at how Real Time Search will effect SEO’s, I wanted to clear up a few issues with the statement before I start – Firstly, there is currently NO real time search engine – Twitter isn’t real time, FriendFeed isn’t real time and Bing just uses Twitter – there’s still a lag between posting, crawling and appearing in search results. Secondly, a lot of these so called real time search engines are just seeking out social mentions NOT crawling the web and indexing it, more akin to buzz and trend monitoring tools than search engines. Moonfruit on Twitter

How do you market a new product or reinvent a product that has been around for 10 years?

There are many different ways to market your product but some companies are taking advantage of the currently very popular social messaging site Twitter.  Twitter gives you the potential to connect with many “followers” and Moonfruit have explored the potential of this with their latest competition. What makes a lasting brand?

Ok, it’s Friday morning so I’m going to keep it quite light. I thought seeing as my weekend plans involve the subject of this post I might as well start there.. she’s parked just across the carpark, her racing green form and chrome finish – you knew I was going to come onto this topic eventually my Vespa PX125 – my prize possession!

Michael Jackson Tickets on eBay

Yes yes we’ve all heard the joke about Jackson Five’s reunion tour – now with 20% off all ticket prices but I have to admit the first thing I thought about when I got my first ‘Michael Jackson has died’ text was… “What about the eBay buyers?”

We all know that when big concerts are on – you can always get over priced tickets on eBay for around 300% face value. But when things like this happen – and 50 tour dates are cancelled at the O2 arena – who will refund the eBayers?

Well – eBay have have issued the following announcement:

The sad news of Michael Jackson’s death has left fans of the King of Pop bereft. eBay is committed to ensuring that no buyer is left out of pocket as a result of the unique nature of the event, and will ensure all buyers on the site can receive a full refund for their ticket purchase.

On this basis, eBay and PayPal is extending its Buyer Protection to all Michael Jackson concert ticket purchases bought on eBay. The company will also help sellers by refunding eBay’s sales commission when they refund buyers for Michael Jackson ticket sales.

Final details of how buyers and sellers can work with eBay and PayPal will be announced early next week. See here for more details: http://www2.ebay.com/aw/uk/200906271249112.html

I think eBay have to be congratulated on this occasion for their prompt and effective strategy on refunds. I bet quite a few buyers are now resting easier… though not so many sellers who are losing their huge profits

Slimming.com Should Prove an Excellent Money-Maker for Affiliates

After a long delay in getting it going, the Slimming.com project is coming along nicely.  With such a powerful yet generic domain name we were faced with the enviable challenge of having a number of different directions within the slimming market where we could bring the site.

After a great deal of discussion and debate, the path we have chosen will be as follows.

The domain is aged eleven years and has a very strong pagerank. The problem is that it hasn’t been active for a number of years.  So first and foremost we wanted to get something live and indexed by the search engines.  That will happen this week when we launch Slimming.com Pre-Launch. I Come Out of the Dark Ages; My First Apple Product

It’s a well known fact that designers like their Mac’s. I’m not a designer. Sure they look nice on the desks, they have decent power but let’s be honest you can build a PC 10x as powerful as a MAC for the same price. While I’m not a Mac hater I have never really owned an Apple product before, that’s right I don’t even have an iPod.

That’s because I usually have a phone with an MP3 player, why would I buy another? Well I needed a new phone and after all the hype I decided to go headfirst into the world of Apple and choose the iPhone 3GS. Continue reading

The No-Follow Fallout

Over the last few weeks there has been a big reaction in the SEM community regarding the changes in treatment (or maybe more the fact that it only the announcement of the changes) of the Nofollow tag from Google.

This post from Matt Cutts kind of starting everything off and there has been quite a lot of discussion on the blogsphere since then, as well as in Matts Comments.

In summary Matt revealed that Google changed it policy and handling of the Nofollow tag over a year ago but never bothered to update webmaster. Continue reading
